One of the many carved sacred stones at Machu Picchu which has been shaped to match the mountains in the distance. No-one is sure exactly what the significance of these stones was, but as they line up with certain astronomical events one theory is that they were used in ceremonies that coincided with these events.
Golden hour indeed. One thing we noticed was how the natural altar stones have been chosen to mimic the shapes of distant mountains. The mountains are invested with enormous spiritual power, and the altar stones connect to the mountains. One of our guides pointed out her personal mountain that she had been linked with as a child.
